About Schistosomiasis Vaccine

Schistosomiasis vaccines target Schistosoma parasites, which infect more than 200 million people. Schistosomiasis causes chronic illness, organ damage, and impaired growth. The disease is transmitted through contaminated freshwater in tropical regions. The Bilhvax vaccine candidate, developed at the Pasteur Institute in Lille, uses a recombinant protein. Clinical trials showed safety and immunogenicity but a Phase 3 trial did not demonstrate efficacy. Sm14, a Brazilian vaccine candidate, has been tested in early clinical trials. Schistosomiasis control currently relies on the drug praziquantel and snail control. The WHO targets elimination of schistosomiasis as a public health problem by 2030. A vaccine would be transformative, particularly in areas with repeated reinfection. Development is hampered by limited commercial incentives for a disease of poverty.
