Chikungunya Vaccine
About Chikungunya Vaccine
IXCHIQ, developed by Valneva, became the first chikungunya vaccine approved by the FDA in November 2023. Chikungunya is a mosquito borne viral disease causing fever and severe joint pain that can persist for months or years. The disease is found in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Climate change has expanded the range of the Aedes mosquitoes that transmit chikungunya. The vaccine uses a live attenuated virus. Clinical trials showed strong immune response in over 98 percent of recipients. The European Medicines Agency recommended approval in 2024. Reports of serious adverse events, particularly in older people, later led to restrictions, and the FDA suspended the US license in August 2025. Chikungunya was first identified in Tanzania in 1952. The name means that which bends up in the Kimakonde language, describing the stooped posture of sufferers.
