About Dengue Vaccine

Dengvaxia, the first dengue vaccine, was developed by Sanofi Pasteur and licensed in Mexico in December 2015. Dengue causes an estimated 100 to 400 million infections annually and thousands of deaths. Dengvaxia showed efficacy in seropositive individuals who had prior dengue infection but increased the risk of severe dengue in seronegative individuals. The Philippines implemented a mass vaccination program in 2016, vaccinating over 800,000 children. When the risk in seronegative individuals became apparent, the program was halted. Sanofi faced criminal charges in the Philippines. The controversy damaged vaccine confidence in the Philippines. A second dengue vaccine, Qdenga TAK 003, was developed by Takeda and first approved in 2022. Qdenga was approved in several countries without a pre vaccination screening requirement, though data on some serotypes in people without prior infection remain limited.
