About SARS Vaccine

SARS vaccine development began during the 2003 SARS epidemic. SARS emerged in China in November 2002 and spread to 29 countries, causing approximately 8,000 cases and 774 deaths before being contained in July 2003. A SARS vaccine developed by Sinovac entered Phase 1 trials in China in 2004 and showed safety and immunogenicity. However, the SARS outbreak was over by the time the vaccine was ready for efficacy trials, and development was suspended. The experience highlighted the challenge of developing vaccines for emerging epidemics. The SARS vaccine effort left a legacy of coronavirus research that proved invaluable for COVID 19. The choice of the spike protein as a target and prefusion stabilization approaches drew on earlier SARS and MERS research. SARS has not reappeared naturally since 2004.
