Universal Flu Vaccine
About Universal Flu Vaccine
Universal influenza vaccine research aims to develop a vaccine that provides protection against all flu strains, eliminating the need for annual vaccination. Current flu vaccines target the hemagglutinin head, which mutates rapidly. Universal vaccine candidates target conserved regions including the hemagglutinin stem, the M2 ion channel, and internal proteins. BiondVax developed a Multimeric 001 universal flu vaccine candidate that completed Phase 3 trials without meeting efficacy endpoints. Moderna and Pfizer are developing mRNA based universal flu vaccines targeting multiple conserved proteins. Flu Mos, developed at the NIH by Barney Graham and colleagues, uses a nanoparticle displaying multiple hemagglutinin subtypes. The rapid development of mRNA technology for COVID 19 has accelerated universal flu vaccine research. A universal flu vaccine could transform influenza prevention.
