About Tuberculosis New Vaccine

New tuberculosis vaccines are urgently needed as BCG provides variable protection. M72 AS01E, developed by GSK, showed approximately 50 percent efficacy in a Phase 2b trial reported in 2018 and 2019, one of the most promising TB vaccine results in decades. A Phase 3 trial began in 2024. MTBVAC, a live attenuated vaccine derived from a clinical Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain, entered a Phase 3 efficacy trial in newborns in 2022. An early trial suggested BCG revaccination might protect adolescents against sustained TB infection, but a larger follow up trial did not confirm this. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Wellcome Trust are funding the M72 Phase 3 trial. A new TB vaccine could save millions of lives, particularly in high burden countries like India, Indonesia, and South Africa.
