Novavax experienced a dramatic turnaround in 2024. After years of struggling to bring its COVID vaccine to market, the company partnered with Sanofi in a deal worth up to about 1.2 billion dollars. Sanofi acquired the rights to co commercialize the Novavax COVID vaccine and to use the Matrix M adjuvant technology in combination with Sanofi flu vaccines. The deal gave Novavax an upfront payment plus milestones and royalties. Novavax stock surged on the announcement. The Sanofi partnership validated Novavaxs protein subunit and adjuvant technology. Novavax also developed a combined COVID flu vaccine candidate and next generation COVID vaccines targeting newer variants. The turnaround demonstrated that even companies that miss the initial market window can find value in partnerships and technology licensing.
