About COVID-19 Pfizer

The Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine was the first mRNA vaccine authorized for emergency use, granted by the UK on December 2, 2020, and by the US FDA on December 11, 2020. The vaccine was developed in record time, approximately 11 months from genetic sequence to authorization. BioNTech, a German company co founded by Turkish German scientists Ugur Sahin and Ozlem Tureci, developed the mRNA technology. Pfizer provided manufacturing and clinical trial expertise. The vaccine showed 95 percent efficacy in preventing symptomatic COVID-19 in clinical trials involving 44,000 participants. Billions of doses have been administered worldwide. The vaccines use lipid nanoparticles to deliver mRNA encoding the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. The rapid development demonstrated the potential of mRNA technology and transformed vaccine science.
