About COVID-19 AstraZeneca

The Oxford AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine was developed by scientists at the University of Oxford Jenner Institute, led by Sarah Gilbert. AstraZeneca partnered with Oxford in April 2020. The vaccine used a chimpanzee adenovirus vector. AstraZeneca committed to selling the vaccine at cost during the pandemic. The UK authorized the vaccine on December 30, 2020. Clinical trials showed approximately 70 percent efficacy, with higher efficacy observed when the interval between doses was longer. The vaccine was the primary vaccine for much of the developing world through the COVAX facility. The vaccine was linked to rare blood clots, leading several European countries to suspend use temporarily. AstraZeneca faced criticism for limited data on older adults in initial trials and for communication problems during rollout.
