COVID-19 Johnson
About COVID-19 Johnson
The Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine used a modified adenovirus vector, different from the mRNA vaccines. The vaccine was authorized as a single dose, unlike the two dose primary series of Pfizer and Moderna. The FDA authorized the vaccine on February 27, 2021. Clinical trials showed 66 percent efficacy at preventing moderate to severe COVID-19 and 85 percent efficacy at preventing severe disease. The vaccine was easier to store, requiring only refrigeration. Production problems at a Baltimore factory run by Emergent BioSolutions contaminated 15 million doses, delaying distribution. The vaccine was linked to rare cases of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome, a blood clotting condition, at a rate of a few cases per million doses. The FDA restricted the J and J vaccine in May 2022 to individuals who could not or would not receive mRNA vaccines.
