Nipah Virus Vaccine
About Nipah Virus Vaccine
Nipah virus vaccine development is motivated by case fatality rates estimated at 40 to 75 percent and the potential for pandemic spread. Nipah, discovered in 1999 during an outbreak in Malaysia and Singapore, is transmitted by fruit bats. Outbreaks have occurred in Bangladesh, India, and the Philippines. A Nipah outbreak in Kerala, India in 2018 killed most of those infected. Several vaccine candidates have shown protection in animal models, including a soluble G glycoprotein vaccine and viral vector vaccines. The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations CEPI has funded Nipah vaccine development. Phase 1 trials began in the 2020s, including an mRNA candidate and an Oxford ChAdOx1 based vaccine. Nipah is on the WHO priority pathogen list for research and development.
