MERS Vaccine
About MERS Vaccine
Middle East Respiratory Syndrome MERS vaccine development began after MERS was identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012. MERS is caused by a coronavirus transmitted from camels to humans. The disease has a mortality rate of approximately 35 percent. Approximately 2,600 cases have been reported, mostly from the Arabian Peninsula. Several MERS vaccine candidates were developed, including DNA vaccines, viral vector vaccines, and protein subunit vaccines. The MERS vaccine effort informed COVID 19 vaccine development. The ChAdOx1 platform behind the Oxford AstraZeneca COVID 19 vaccine had previously been used for a MERS vaccine candidate. GLS 5300, a MERS DNA vaccine by GeneOne Life Science and Inovio, showed immunogenicity in Phase 1 trials. MERS outbreaks continue sporadically, and vaccine candidates remain available for efficacy trials.
