Lassa Fever Vaccine
About Lassa Fever Vaccine
Lassa fever vaccine development targets a viral hemorrhagic fever endemic in West Africa. Lassa virus is estimated to infect 100,000 to 300,000 people annually, causing thousands of deaths. The disease is particularly dangerous in pregnancy, with high maternal and fetal mortality. The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations CEPI has prioritized Lassa vaccine development. Several candidates are in development, including a recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus vector, viral vector vaccines, and protein subunit vaccines. A live attenuated reassortant vaccine candidate showed promise in animal models. The IAVI rVSV based Lassa fever vaccine has advanced into clinical trials in West Africa. Lassa fever is on the WHO priority pathogen list. Climate change and deforestation may increase human contact with the rodent reservoir of Lassa virus.
