About Hookworm Vaccine

The hookworm vaccine targets Necator americanus, a parasitic worm that infects hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Hookworm infection causes iron deficiency anemia, stunting growth and cognitive development in children. The Human Hookworm Vaccine Initiative, led by Peter Hotez at the Sabin Vaccine Institute, developed the Na GST 1 vaccine candidate. The vaccine targets an enzyme the hookworm uses to digest blood. Clinical trials in Brazil showed safety and immunogenicity. The vaccine is intended for endemic areas, particularly Sub Saharan Africa, Brazil, and Southeast Asia. Hookworm infection is a neglected tropical disease that has received little pharmaceutical investment. The Vaccine Development Center at Baylor College of Medicine continues research. The project demonstrates the challenges of developing vaccines for poverty related diseases.
