About Gonorrhea Vaccine

Gonorrhea vaccine development has been challenging due to the antigenic variability of Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Gonorrhea infects approximately 82 million people annually and is becoming increasingly drug resistant. Untreated gonorrhea can cause infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and disseminated infection. A surprising finding from New Zealand showed that the MeNZB meningococcal B vaccine provided cross protection against gonorrhea, with approximately 31 percent efficacy. This finding has motivated development of gonorrhea vaccines based on meningococcal B technology. In 2025 England began offering the 4CMenB vaccine Bexsero to some people at higher risk of gonorrhoea, the first programme of its kind. A dedicated gonorrhea vaccine would be transformative for sexual health. The emergence of gonorrhea strains resistant to multiple antibiotics, including ceftriaxone, increases the urgency of vaccine development.
