Group B Strep Vaccine
About Group B Strep Vaccine
Group B Streptococcus GBS vaccine targets the leading cause of sepsis and meningitis in newborns. GBS is estimated to cause around 150,000 stillbirths and infant deaths annually. Maternal GBS vaccination could prevent most cases. Pfizer developed a GBS conjugate vaccine candidate, GBS6. MinervaX developed a protein based GBS vaccine candidate. WHO analyses suggest that a widely used maternal GBS vaccine could prevent many stillbirths and infant deaths. GBS vaccination would be given during pregnancy, similar to pertussis and influenza vaccination. The GBS vaccine illustrates the growing interest in maternal immunization to protect newborns during their first months of life.
