About Dengue Vaccine Philippines

The Dengvaxia controversy in the Philippines was one of the most damaging vaccine safety scares of the 21st century. The Philippine government purchased billions of pesos worth of Dengvaxia and vaccinated over 830,000 children starting in 2016. In November 2017, Sanofi announced that Dengvaxia could increase the risk of severe dengue in seronegative individuals who had never had dengue. The Philippine government halted the program. Investigations revealed that children were vaccinated without adequate screening for prior dengue exposure. Deaths among vaccinated children were heavily publicized, although expert reviews did not establish that the vaccine caused most of them. The controversy destroyed trust in vaccines in the Philippines. Measles vaccination rates fell, contributing to a 2019 measles outbreak that killed hundreds of people, mostly children. Sanofi faced criminal charges. The case demonstrates how vaccine safety issues can have cascading effects on other vaccination programs.
