About COVID-19 Sputnik

Sputnik V, developed by the Gamaleya Research Institute in Moscow, was registered by the Russian government on August 11, 2020, before Phase 3 clinical trials were completed. The vaccine uses two different adenovirus vectors for the first and second doses. Russia faced criticism for authorizing the vaccine before safety and efficacy data were available. The vaccine was later shown to be 91.6 percent effective in peer reviewed results published in The Lancet. Sputnik V was authorized in dozens of countries, particularly in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. The Russian Direct Investment Fund marketed the vaccine internationally. Production issues limited supply. Russia faced accusations of vaccine diplomacy, using Sputnik V to build geopolitical influence.
