COVID-19 Sinovac
About COVID-19 Sinovac
Sinovac developed CoronaVac using an inactivated whole virus approach. The vaccine was authorized in China for emergency use in July 2020, before Phase 3 trials were completed. A Phase 3 trial in Brazil reported about 50 percent efficacy against symptomatic COVID-19, with higher protection against more serious disease, although the trial recorded few severe cases. The vaccine was distributed to numerous countries, particularly in Latin America and Southeast Asia. Brazil, Indonesia, and Turkey were major customers. Brazilian regulators briefly paused the Sinovac trial in November 2020 after a participant death that was found to be unrelated to the vaccine. The vaccine was less effective than mRNA vaccines but easier to store and transport. China distributed billions of doses of Sinovac and Sinopharm vaccines domestically and internationally.
