The Novavax NVX CoV2373 vaccine uses a recombinant spike protein produced in insect cells with a proprietary Matrix M adjuvant. The vaccine showed 89.7 percent efficacy in a UK trial, with lower efficacy in a South African trial conducted while the Beta variant circulated. Novavax faced years of manufacturing delays. The Serum Institute of India manufactured the vaccine under license as Covovax. The vaccine was authorized in Europe in December 2021 and by the WHO in December 2021. Novavax did not receive FDA emergency use authorization until July 2022. By then, Pfizer and Moderna had captured the US market. Novavax shares peaked in February 2021 and had lost most of their value by 2023. The company survived by pivoting to COVID booster development and partnering with Sanofi. The Novavax story illustrates the challenges of vaccine manufacturing at scale.
