About COVID-19 Novavax

Novavax developed a protein subunit vaccine using recombinant spike protein and a proprietary adjuvant. The vaccine showed approximately 90 percent efficacy in clinical trials. Novavax struggled with manufacturing and regulatory delays. The company received 1.6 billion dollars from the US governments Operation Warp Speed but did not receive FDA emergency use authorization until July 2022, well after Pfizer and Moderna had dominated the market. Novavax technology was more traditional than mRNA, which some vaccine hesitant individuals found appealing. The vaccine was authorized in Europe, the UK, India, and other countries before the US. Novavax shares lost most of their value between early 2021 and 2023. The case illustrates how manufacturing challenges can undermine promising vaccine technology.
