Vaccine COVID Kids
About Vaccine COVID Kids
COVID vaccine authorization for children progressed in stages. The FDA authorized Pfizer for ages 16 and older in December 2020, ages 12 to 15 in May 2021, ages 5 to 11 in October 2021, and ages 6 months to 4 years in June 2022. The lower dose pediatric formulation required separate clinical trials. Pediatric COVID vaccination rates varied significantly by country. In the US roughly 40 percent of children aged 5 to 11 received at least one dose, while the UK offered vaccination to healthy 5 to 11 year olds only on a one off basis in 2022. The risk benefit calculation for pediatric COVID vaccination differed by country. In developing countries, COVID vaccination of children was deprioritized in favor of adults and routine immunization. The debate over pediatric COVID vaccination revealed different risk tolerances and values across societies. Some parents expressed concern about myocarditis risk in adolescent males.
