Covaxin
About Covaxin
Covaxin was developed by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research. The vaccine uses an inactivated whole virus approach with an alum adjuvant. Phase 3 trials showed 77.8 percent efficacy against symptomatic COVID 19. India granted emergency authorization in January 2021 before Phase 3 data was available, which was criticized by scientists. Covaxin was administered to millions of Indians. WHO granted emergency use listing in November 2021. Bharat Biotech faced controversy when Brazil suspended Covaxin importation pending investigation of corruption allegations. The company was also investigated for alleged clinical trial irregularities. Covaxin demonstrated Indias ability to develop and manufacture vaccines indigenously. Hundreds of millions of doses were administered domestically and internationally. The case illustrates the intersection of vaccine science, politics, and allegations of corruption.
