Candida Auris
About Candida Auris
Candida auris vaccine development targets a multidrug resistant fungus first identified in 2009. Candida auris causes bloodstream infections with mortality rates of 30 to 60 percent. The fungus persists on surfaces and spreads in healthcare settings. The CDC declared Candida auris an urgent threat in 2019. Candida vaccine development has been ongoing for decades, targeting different Candida species. A vaccine against Candida albicans, the most common species, has been a long standing goal. NDV 3A, a vaccine targeting Candida, has been tested in preclinical and early clinical studies. The rise of Candida auris adds urgency. No fungal vaccine is licensed for humans. Serious fungal infections are estimated to contribute to well over a million deaths annually. Climate change may expand the range of pathogenic fungi.
