About Vaccine Manufacturing India
India is the worlds largest vaccine producer by volume, commonly cited as supplying around 60 percent of the worlds vaccines. The Serum Institute of India SII, founded in 1966 by Cyrus Poonawalla, is the largest vaccine manufacturer globally. SII produces well over a billion doses annually. SII manufactured Covishield the AstraZeneca vaccine and Covovax the Novavax vaccine during the COVID pandemic. Bharat Biotech, founded in 1996, developed Covaxin and other novel vaccines. Indian vaccine manufacturing has been instrumental in global immunization programs. Gavi procures most of its vaccines from Indian manufacturers. The Indian government has supported vaccine manufacturing through regulatory streamlining and funding. India faces challenges including quality control concerns, regulatory harmonization, and competition from Chinese manufacturers. The COVID pandemic highlighted Indias critical role in global vaccine supply chains.
