Vaccine Lottery Ohio
About Vaccine Lottery Ohio
Ohio launched Vax a Million in May 2021, offering 1 million lottery prizes to vaccinated adults and college scholarships to vaccinated teenagers. Ohio officials reported a short lived rise in vaccinations after the announcement. Other states including New York, Maryland, Colorado, and Oregon followed with similar programs. California offered 50 dollar gift cards. West Virginia offered 100 dollar savings bonds to young people. The effectiveness of vaccine lotteries was debated, and independent studies reached mixed conclusions about whether the Ohio lottery had a lasting effect. Any boost appeared temporary, and vaccination rates declined after the initial excitement. The lottery approach has not been widely adopted for other vaccines but demonstrates creative approaches to increasing uptake.
