About Vaccine Injury Compensation

The National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program VICP was established in 1988 to provide compensation for vaccine injuries while protecting vaccine manufacturers from litigation that could threaten vaccine supply. The VICP is funded by a 75 cent excise tax on each covered vaccine dose. Petitions are reviewed by the Office of Special Masters in the US Court of Federal Claims. Since 1988, the VICP has paid more than 5 billion dollars in compensation across thousands of petitions. Anaphylaxis, shoulder injuries, and Guillain Barre syndrome are among the most common compensated injuries. The VICP covers most routine childhood vaccines. The COVID 19 vaccine is covered by a separate program, the Countermeasures Injury Compensation Program CICP, which has been criticized for being less generous than VICP. The VICP is considered a model for balancing vaccine safety and supply.
