Vaccine Hesitancy HCP
About Vaccine Hesitancy HCP
Healthcare provider vaccine hesitancy emerged as a concern during the COVID 19 vaccination campaign. Surveys showed that a substantial minority of healthcare workers were initially hesitant about COVID vaccination. Some healthcare workers refused mandatory vaccination and were fired. Houston Methodist Hospital terminated approximately 150 employees who refused vaccination in June 2021. Several states considered banning vaccine mandates for healthcare workers. Healthcare worker hesitancy is particularly concerning because providers are trusted sources of vaccine information. When providers are hesitant, patients are less likely to accept vaccination. Studies show that provider recommendation is the strongest predictor of vaccine acceptance. Training healthcare providers in vaccine communication and addressing their concerns is critical for vaccination programs. Provider hesitancy is not limited to COVID vaccines but extends to influenza, HPV, and other vaccines.
