Vaccine Equity LMIC
About Vaccine Equity LMIC
Vaccine equity addresses the gap in vaccine access between high income and low and middle income countries LMICs. Before Gavi, vaccine introduction in LMICs lagged 10 to 15 years behind rich countries. Gavi has reduced this gap to 1 to 2 years for many vaccines. However, disparities remain. HPV vaccine introduction in LMICs has been slow despite the high cervical cancer burden. The COVID pandemic exposed stark inequities. By the end of 2021, only a small fraction of people in low income countries had received a COVID dose, compared with most people in high income countries. COVAX aimed to address this but was underfunded. Vaccine manufacturing in Africa and other LMICs is being expanded to reduce dependency on imported vaccines. The African Union target is to manufacture 60 percent of vaccines used in Africa by 2040.
