About Vaccine Decade 2010
The Decade of Vaccines was launched at the World Economic Forum in 2010 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The Gates Foundation pledged 10 billion dollars over 10 years to vaccine research, development, and delivery. The Decade of Vaccines Collaboration produced a Global Vaccine Action Plan endorsed by the World Health Assembly in 2012. The plan aimed to extend the benefits of vaccines to all by 2020. Progress was mixed. Polio eradication was not achieved by the 2020 target. HPV vaccine introduction in LMICs lagged. However, new vaccines including pneumococcal, rotavirus, and meningococcal A were introduced in dozens of countries. The Immunization Agenda 2030 succeeded the Global Vaccine Action Plan. The Gates Foundation has invested billions of dollars in vaccines since 2000. The Decade of Vaccines elevated vaccines as a global health priority and accelerated access.
