Vaccine Catch Up
About Vaccine Catch Up
The COVID pandemic disrupted routine immunization programs worldwide. In 2021, 25 million children missed one or more doses of DTP vaccine, the highest number since 2008. Catch up campaigns were launched to reach missed children. The Big Catch Up initiative by WHO, UNICEF, Gavi, and the Gates Foundation aimed to restore vaccination coverage to pre pandemic levels. Immunization recovery was uneven. Some regions recovered quickly while others continued to lag. The catch up effort faced challenges including healthcare worker shortages, supply chain disruptions, and vaccine hesitancy exacerbated by COVID. By 2023, global DTP3 coverage had recovered to 84 percent, still below the 86 percent pre pandemic level. The pandemic demonstrated the fragility of immunization programs and the importance of resilience in health systems.
