Vaccine Breastfeeding
About Vaccine Breastfeeding
Health authorities consider breastfeeding compatible with most vaccines. Breast milk contains antibodies that provide additional protection to infants but does not interfere with vaccines. WHO, CDC, and AAP guidance states that vaccines including COVID, influenza, Tdap, and hepatitis B can be given during breastfeeding, as can live vaccines such as MMR and varicella. Yellow fever vaccine is an exception requiring caution, because rare transmission of vaccine virus through breast milk has been reported. Maternal vaccination during breastfeeding also benefits the infant through antibodies in breast milk. COVID vaccination during breastfeeding produces antibodies in breast milk that may protect infants. Some breastfeeding mothers are hesitant about vaccination due to concerns about transmitting vaccine components through milk, and guidance from health authorities addresses these concerns.
