About Vaccine Austria Mandate

Austria became the first European country to pass a general COVID vaccine mandate in January 2022. The law required all adults to be vaccinated against COVID with exemptions for medical reasons and pregnancy. Enforcement was scheduled to begin in March 2022. However, the mandate was suspended before enforcement began as the Omicron wave subsided. The mandate was formally repealed in June 2022. The Austrian mandate was controversial and generated protests. The suspension before enforcement made the law purely symbolic. Other countries including Italy, Greece, and the UK implemented sector specific COVID vaccine mandates for healthcare workers and elderly care staff. Italy ended its healthcare worker mandate in late 2022. The experience with COVID vaccine mandates demonstrated both the power and limits of mandates in liberal democracies.
