About Vaccine Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that can occur after any vaccine. The rate is approximately 1 per million doses for most vaccines. Early monitoring found somewhat higher rates for mRNA COVID vaccines, a few cases per million doses, many in people with a history of allergies. The CDC advised a 15 to 30 minute observation period after mRNA vaccination. Most anaphylaxis cases occurred within 15 minutes, and early US monitoring reported no anaphylaxis deaths. Polyethylene glycol PEG in the lipid nanoparticles was suspected as a trigger. Individuals with known PEG allergy were advised to avoid mRNA vaccines. Polysorbate was considered a possible trigger for rare anaphylaxis after the J and J COVID vaccine. The CDC developed screening questionnaires to identify individuals at risk. Health authorities concluded that the benefits of vaccination outweighed this rare risk.
