Mpox Vaccine
About Mpox Vaccine
The JYNNEOS vaccine, developed by Bavarian Nordic, protects against mpox formerly known as monkeypox and smallpox. The vaccine uses a modified vaccinia virus that cannot replicate in humans. JYNNEOS was approved by the FDA in 2019 for smallpox and mpox. During the 2022 global mpox outbreak, JYNNEOS demand exceeded supply. The US declared a public health emergency in August 2022. To stretch limited supply, the FDA authorized intradermal administration at one fifth the standard dose, effectively quintupling supply. The outbreak disproportionately affected men who have sex with men. Vaccination campaigns focused on communities at higher risk. The outbreak declined by late 2022 after more than 80,000 cases globally. A more severe mpox outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2023 to 2024 highlighted ongoing risks.
