Ebola Vaccine
About Ebola Vaccine
The Ebola vaccine rVSV ZEBOV, marketed as Ervebo, was developed by the Public Health Agency of Canada and licensed by Merck. The vaccine uses a vesicular stomatitis virus vector expressing the Ebola surface protein. During the 2014 to 2016 West African Ebola epidemic, which killed over 11,000 people, the vaccine was rushed through clinical trials. A ring vaccination strategy was used in Guinea, vaccinating contacts of Ebola cases. The vaccine showed very high efficacy in the ring vaccination trial. Ervebo was approved by the FDA in December 2019. During the 2018 to 2020 Democratic Republic of Congo Ebola outbreak, the vaccine was administered to over 300,000 people. A two dose Ebola vaccine regimen by Johnson and Johnson was also developed and approved in Europe in 2020.
