About Measles Resurgence

Measles resurged globally in 2023 to 2024. WHO reported a sharp rise in measles cases globally in 2023 compared to 2022. The UK saw a large measles outbreak centred on Birmingham in early 2024. The US has seen multiple outbreaks, primarily among unvaccinated communities. In Samoa, a 2019 measles outbreak killed 83 people after vaccination rates fell sharply amid a vaccine safety incident and anti vaccine activism. The Democratic Republic of Congo experienced a large measles outbreak with many child deaths in 2023. Measles is extremely contagious. One case can infect 12 to 18 susceptible people. Coverage of around 95 percent is generally cited as needed to prevent outbreaks. Measles also causes immune amnesia, erasing existing immune memory. The resurgence demonstrates what happens when vaccination rates decline and routine immunization services are disrupted.
