About H7N9 Bird Flu

H7N9 avian influenza emerged in China in March 2013. The virus infected approximately 1,568 people with a mortality rate of approximately 39 percent. Most cases were linked to poultry exposure in live bird markets. China closed live bird markets in affected cities, reducing transmission. Several H7N9 vaccines were developed, including inactivated, live attenuated, and recombinant vaccines. The WHO maintains H7N9 vaccine stockpiles. H7N9 cases declined after China implemented poultry vaccination in 2017. The H7N9 threat demonstrated the importance of surveillance and vaccine readiness for novel influenza strains. The virus has not acquired the ability to transmit efficiently between humans, but if it did, the consequences could be catastrophic given the high mortality rate.
