COVAX
About COVAX
COVAX was established in April 2020 as the global initiative for equitable COVID 19 vaccine access. Led by Gavi, WHO, and CEPI, COVAX aimed to provide 2 billion vaccine doses to participating countries in 2021. High income countries self financed purchases through COVAX. Lower income countries received donated doses. COVAX delivered its first billion doses in January 2022. However, COVAX was criticized for being too slow. High income countries secured vaccines through bilateral deals, bypassing COVAX. India restricted vaccine exports during its devastating second wave, disrupting COVAX supply. COVAX struggled with vaccine hesitancy in some recipient countries and short shelf life of donated doses. Despite these challenges, COVAX delivered nearly 2 billion doses to 146 economies, which its organisers described as the largest global vaccine rollout in history.
