About CIA Fake Vaccine Program

The CIA ran a fake hepatitis B vaccination program in Abbottabad, Pakistan in 2011 to collect DNA samples in an attempt to locate Osama bin Laden. A Pakistani doctor, Shakil Afridi, was recruited to organize the program. Afridi was arrested by Pakistan and in 2012 sentenced to 33 years in prison on charges of links to a militant group, a sentence later reduced. The fake vaccination program severely damaged trust in vaccination programs in Pakistan, one of the last polio endemic countries. Polio vaccination teams were attacked and killed. Taliban commanders banned polio vaccination in areas they controlled, citing the CIA program as evidence that vaccination was a Western plot. Public health leaders condemned the operation, and in 2014 the White House stated that the CIA would no longer use vaccination programs for intelligence operations. The incident has been used by anti polio vaccination propagandists in Pakistan for years.
