Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine
About Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine
Typhoid conjugate vaccines represent a major advance over older typhoid vaccines. Typbar TCV, developed by Bharat Biotech, was the first conjugate typhoid vaccine prequalified by WHO, at the end of 2017. Conjugate vaccines can be given to infants and provide longer lasting immunity than polysaccharide vaccines. A large effectiveness study in Bangladesh showed 85 percent efficacy. WHO policy supports TCV introduction in endemic countries. Pakistan introduced TCV in 2019, the first country to do so. An extensively drug resistant XDR typhoid outbreak in Pakistan highlighted the urgency of vaccination. The Gavi Alliance supports TCV introduction in eligible countries. The development of TCV demonstrates how vaccine technology can address neglected tropical diseases. TCV also has the potential to reduce antibiotic use, addressing the growing threat of drug resistant typhoid.
