Q Fever Vaccine
About Q Fever Vaccine
Q fever vaccine, Q VAX, was developed in Australia and licensed in 1989. Q fever is caused by Coxiella burnetii, a bacterium found in livestock. The disease causes fever, headache, and in chronic cases, endocarditis. Q fever is a notable occupational disease in Australia, particularly among abattoir workers and farmers. Q VAX is used for occupational risk groups. Pre vaccination screening is essential because administering the vaccine to previously infected individuals can cause severe reactions. The vaccine provides long lasting protection. Q fever was investigated as a potential bioweapon during the Cold War. The Australian Q fever vaccination program has significantly reduced Q fever cases in at risk occupations.
