Cholera Vaccine
About Cholera Vaccine
Jaime Ferran developed the first cholera vaccine during an outbreak in Spain in 1885. Ferrans vaccine was controversial and its methods were questioned by contemporary investigators. Modern oral cholera vaccines were developed in the 1980s and 1990s. Dukoral, Shanchol, and Euvichol are WHO prequalified oral cholera vaccines. Cholera causes severe watery diarrhea that can kill within hours. The disease is transmitted through contaminated water. Cholera remains endemic in approximately 50 countries. Yemen experienced the largest cholera outbreak in modern history during its civil war, with over 2.5 million suspected cases from 2016 to 2022. Oral cholera vaccines are used for outbreak control and in endemic areas. The WHO maintains a global stockpile of oral cholera vaccines for emergency use.
