About Adenovirus Vaccine

Adenovirus vaccines were developed for the US military in the 1970s. Adenovirus causes acute respiratory disease, particularly in crowded conditions like military training camps. The original vaccine used live attenuated adenovirus types 4 and 7 in enteric coated tablets. Production stopped in 1996 when the sole manufacturer closed. Adenovirus infections in military recruits surged after vaccination stopped. The vaccine was reintroduced in 2011 after a new manufacturer was found. Adenovirus vaccination of military recruits has dramatically reduced adenovirus associated respiratory disease in this population. The vaccine is not available for civilians. Adenovirus also causes other diseases including conjunctivitis and gastroenteritis. Research on civilian adenovirus vaccines has been limited by market considerations and the diversity of adenovirus types.
